CKLA Skills spelling trees have always helped my students understand that different words have different spellings for sounds. Some years I have made leaves that my students place on the trees. Other times they tell me the branch and spell it, while I record it on our tree.
CKLA Knowledge units have such interesting concepts in their daily lessons. My students always have wonderful conversations, and make great connections afterwards. During year two, I noticed they weren't retaining all of that information throughout the year, so I decided to add daily writing into each unit.
This year I moved to a new classroom on the other side of our building. My new room is quite lovely, but I would no longer have a bathroom in my room.

Unit 8 Animals and Habitats is next Amplify Knowledge series, This is a unit my students eagerly await each year. I mean, who doesn't love learning about wild animals?
It is also a great unit for incorporating science experiments and LOTS of read aloud!
Unit 7 in up next in the Amplify Knowledge series: History of the Earth. Volcanoes, dinosaurs, rocks, minerals - this unit has all the things first graders want to learn more about.
Now we are up to Domain 6 in our Amplify Knowledge series, Astronomy! My first graders always love this unit - because who doesn't love learning more about space?
Amplify 1st Grade CKLA Knowledge Domain 5: Early American Civilizations Celebration Ideas
11/06/2024The next part is Domain 5 in our Amplify Knowledge series, Early American Civilizations! This unit closely examines the Maya, Aztec and Inca civilizations.
My students always enjoy learning about these 3 civilizations. It ties in so well with Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, so they don't have to switch their train of thinking too much.
Now we are up to Domain 4 in our Amplify Knowledge series, Early World Civilizations!
This is the first history unit of the year, so it is a bit of a switch in their thinking. They are used to hearing stories, and this unit has those. However, they are more of a realistic fiction, based on facts from these ancient civilizations.

Part 2 in the CKLA Amplify Knowledge series is Unit 2, The Human Body!
My 1st graders always enjoy CKLA's Human Body unit every year. They have so many questions about how their bodies work, and this unit does a great job of helping them understand the way each body system functions.
It cover 5 systems: skeletal, circulatory, digestive, muscular, and nervous system. These are the activities I used to help to enhance their understanding of each system. We used some throughout, and again at the end of the unit to celebrate all they have learned!

We have used many different programs for our ELA Intervention block over the past 5 years: Heggerty, Brain Friendly Reading, and UFLI.
I love the daily repetition in these programs, and how it helps my students to feel confident when reading and writing.
